Artist Statement
Much of my tapestry work is based on emotion and perception. I strive to produce compositions that give glimpses of impressions of the natural world around me, attempting to make connection with the observer through sentiments and personal experience.
Biography
Textile artist Andrea Butler has been honing her weaving skills for many years. Andrea likes to explore the possibilities of tapestry by weaving tapestries large and small, the largest completed work size being 1.35 m x 8.84 m, and the smallest piece being 10 cm x 10 cm.
For tapestries, she prefers to use a slightly unconventional technique called ‘eccentric weaving’. This approach gives her the freedom of movement on a two-dimensional surface by building up sections at angles. Eccentric weaving is known to cause wonky edges, which have become a signature of Andrea’s smaller works.
As an avid hiker, Andrea is able to marry her passions for being in nature, and at the loom by creating abstract landscape tapestries. This allows her to continually explore cyclical change and how it informs her practice of weaving. Now that she has added a mini travel loom to her inventory of tools, she can further blend her love of the forest and yarn by weaving while on the move.
