Students learn about the elements of art through a series of drawing exercises, aimed at developing their knowledge, skills and art vocabulary. Along with line, shape, colour, value, form, texture, and space, students will learn about positive and negative space, optical illusions, shading and layering, and patterning. They will have a great time learning fun facts about the history of drawing since the dawn of time!

- Op-Art: exploring line, form, colour
- Holes and Layers: exploring values, shading, line, space
- Optical Illusion: exploring line, form, value, shading
- Notan: exploring shape, pattern, colour, positive/negative space
- Draw your sneaker: exploring line, shape, pattern, colour, texture, space

Age Group: this class is designed for children ages 9-12
COVID-19 POLICY NOTE: As a public building, SJAC must follow the Government of New Brunswick’s Public Health guidelines on the coronavirus. In the unfortunate event that the local Saint John Zone must ‘move back’ to stricter social distancing policies and classes must be canceled, participants will be refunded for the remaining classes.
Please note that community face masks are required during the class. We will be practicing social distancing in our big workshop room!
About the Instructor:
Harriet Taylor, DIPL, BBA, BFA, Med, is the Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Saint John Arts Centre. She returned to her hometown of Saint John after a lengthy career at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD). Harriet has taught courses and workshops in Canada, the US, and the Caribbean, and maintains a studio practice in the visual arts. She is very excited to be teaching in this new program aimed at developing the creative talents of kids and youth.
