‘I Live with Art’ presents Stained Glass Revisited: Artists’ Interpretation of an Ancient Craft

Artist Statement

The nature of stained glass is to render ideas symbolically, and a stained glass artist includes the design elements of color, line, light, shade, and texture when producing a piece of stained glass. The stained glass artist in ancient times had as his objective to impress the faithful and bring light and color to a Medieval world, which was pretty bleak for most people. The artists in this show have (sometimes) included in their pieces the same design elements that you might see in more traditional stained glass design, but as painters, jewellers, fibre artists, photographers, and potters, their tribute to stained glass is very individual – some fun, some fanciful, some evocative – all one of a kind. Hope you enjoy the show!

Tandi Hooper-Clark founded I Live with Art, an Art Rental & Sales business in May of 2015. Since that time the online art gallery has grown to represent 22 local artists, and offers residential and business clients the opportunity to “try out” art before deciding to invest. Tandi has been surrounded by art, in one form or another, all her life (her parents are John & Kathy Hooper) and was the founder of Handworks Gallery which opened in 1992, and which she ran with her business partner, Kate Kerr, for 10 years. Over the past year she has joined forces with sister Sue and mother Kathy as part of Hooper Studios Gallery in Hampton, which represents more than 30 local artists & carftspeople. I Live with Art has given Tandi the chance to once again work closely with artists: talented, creative, fun, inspiring, sometimes quirky, individuals. Who could ask for more?

The artists and craftspeople in this show were asked to create a piece of work based on their interpretation of the ancient art of stained glass. They were given no “guidelines” and the resulting works speak to the diversity of style and thought process of this group of creators. The featured artists are: Mary Collier-Fleet, Brian Comeau, Sheryl Crowley, Andrew Giffin, Fred Harrison, Kathy Hooper, Sue Hooper, Theresa MacKnight, Fabiola Martinez, Rachel Morouney, Bob Morouney, Mary Kay O’Brien, Deborah Payne, Gudi Pach, Joe Pach, Rob Roy, Helen Stanley, Helen Shideler, Patricia Tingley, Dan Xu.
