Artists’ Statements

PETER CUNNINGHAM

“This painting is done from the live model

in my studio over three sittings. It is Alla

Prima but with an emphasis on capturing

the reality in front of me, a literal

approach and not an interpretation of

what I feel about what is in front of me.”

MANAMI FUKUDA

“I love looking at things carefully and

deliberately. Realism forces me to spend

time with surface and texture. You know

it works when the technique becomes the

mystery.”

PETER GOUGH

“It has been said that modern realism

begins from the position that truth can

be discovered by the individual through

the senses. “Rouge” may be a departure

from my naturalism landscapes but the

subjects I have chosen to paint are as

well appealing to the senses. Some of the

images play on the physical, such as taste,

texture, sight and smell while others play

on the emotional side of our being and

may even evoke memories from past or

special moments in our lives.”

HERZL KASHETSKY

“I paint what I see, I paint what I feel;

I paint for fun and I paint for real. The

degree of realism varies depending on the

subject & what I wish to express.“

BRIAN LASAGA

“Realism for me is trying to communicate

my visual experiences, thoughts and

emotions from my point of view with

nature to my viewers. When viewing

my work I want the viewer to have an

experience rather than just be viewing a

picture or painting. My aim is to try and

capture an image so that the viewer is

seeing it for the !rst time ever”.

BRUCE PASHAK

“My art has inevitably been concerned

with the notion of the real, or more

speci!cally, how the realness of

something is determined; the difference

between the object (painting, sculpture)

and the perceived object.”

JOHN POTTLE

“I have neither the skills nor the patience

to strive for the excesses of trompe-l’oeuil

painting, and settle for a funked up

version of “realism”.

ALVIN RICHARD

‘‘My artwork tends to gravitate towards

a high form of Realism or Hyperrealism.

Subject matter is everything and

inspiration often occurs during daily

occurrences.“

CATHY ROSS

“My paintings describe plants and “owers

in an accurate and realistic way. I am not

attempting to reproduce reality, I am

adjusting, adding and omitting until I am

happy with the reality I have created.”

PETER SALMON

“Realism has always had a bad ‘rep’

among art critics and certainly among

other artists. Maybe it’s because it needs

no interpretation or explanation. No

mystery- it’s all in front of you. I like to think Banksy would agree.”

CLIFF TURNER

“Realism is about making decisions. What

to include or exclude allows me to create

a narrative within the subject. The highly

realistic manner in which the work is

rendered creates an alternate reality that

is accessable and believable.”

LYNN WIGGINTON

“As a painter, I have chosen to document

and celebrate the heritage and beauty

of Atlantic Canada. Using the tools of a

realist painter, light and shadow, tone

and colour, I re”ect upon and question

our historical, traditional, and present

responses to our built and natural

environment.”
