Intro to Italic Calligraphy

The italic hand is one of the loveliest and most versatile calligraphic hands. It originated in Italy during the Renaissance and is still widely practiced today. Join Miriam Jones for this workshop which will introduce you to the basic letter forms of a standard Italic. By the end of the six weeks, students should begin to feel comfortable forming words in the script. Level: Suitable for beginners, or intermediate calligraphers seeking to practice their skills. Please see supply list below.
Tuesday evenings, 7-9pm • March 10, 17, 24, 31, April 7, 14, 2020 • Cost: $90

Supplies:

Calligraphy supplies, beyond the very basics, are not always easy to get without going online. You may be able to find most of the following items at Michaels, and Endeavours in Fredericton certainly sells them. If you can’t get hold of everything, don’t worry: the instructor will bring a supply of pen holders, nibs, ink, and paper to sell at cost. If you have never done calligraphy before, you can get going with very little equipment. If you are more experienced, bring as much or as little of your kit as you like!

Supply list:

  • Speedball C2 nibs or similar (you will want to have at least two)
  • Any standard straight pen holder that fits your nibs
  • Higgins Eternal Ink or other basic calligraphy ink (try to avoid India or other impermeable inks, for the sake of the clean up)
  • pad of 11” x 14” paper: bond, cartridge or layout (smooth, not too thick, suitable for ink)
  • A few sheets of nicer paper
  • rag or two (flannelette is nice; something with minimal lint)
  • Pencils, one soft/dark
  • Eraser
  • Ruler (longer metal t-square is ideal but don’t buy one specially)
Optional supplies
    • Nibs in other sizes
    • A thin dark marker
    • Any other inks (colours!), paper or other favourite supplies you may want to bring.
    • Drawing boards are helpful with broad pen-work. The SJAC has them but if you have one you are used to, you may want to bring it.
